EndZone Athletics is proud to bring you an interview 14 year NFL Veteran Robbie Tobeck. After spending the previous 7 years as the starting center for the Seattle Seahawks, Tobeck decided it was time to hang it up and retire after this past season. We asked him some questions about his career in sports and any advice he'd like to pass on to the next generation of athletes.
What things were most important in your decision to attend Washington State University?
The opportunity to play in the Pac 10 as well as a chance to attain a college degree from a respectable university. I also liked the people, the atmosphere, and felt that I would really fit in there. It was a comfortable fit. That is important when you are going to spend 4 or 5 years somewhere.
Throughout your career how has goal setting played a role in your success?
I’m a big believer in goal setting. You have to have your ultimate goal and then you have to have little goals along the way. These goals are like steps that help you climb to your ultimate goal.
What kinds of obstacles and adversity did you face, and how did you overcome them?
I had only played 4 games of football in high school. I was a tweener with little experience but through dedication and work I was able to overcome those obstacles. I refused to give in or give up.
If you could do it over again, are there any things that you would have done differently to prepare for college athletics?
I would have went to more camps and tried to receive as much coaching as possible. Also I would have hit the weight room more.
Did you contact any coaches with highlight tapes or materials prior to competing in college?
Yes I sent out letters and video.
Do you have any advice for high school athletes trying to compete at the college level?
I think my last few answers give that advice. It’s not for everyone, but those blessed with the ability and the heart to work through challenges and overcome obstacles will receive a lifetime of memories and success.
How do you feel about athletic development and strength training for high school athletes?
I think it is one of the most important yet overlooked things a young person can do today.
With athletic development a person can achieve the maximum.
What qualities have you seen in the most successful individuals you’ve been around?
Self-motivated.
Now that you are retired, what are you doing to keep busy these days?
I still work out almost everyday. It is a lifestyle that I enjoy and I think is very important. I also work as an insurance broker with Griffin Maclean in Bellevue. I find insurance is an exciting and very rewarding career after spending 14 years in the NFL.
